For the Love of the Olympics

I like the olympics.  I think most people enjoy the olympics.  But can we watch the olympics?  Of course not.  Well, we can watch the select few things that NBC graciously decides to show us.  But anything else?  Oh, of course not.  Watching NBC's covereage, you'd think that the US was the only country in the world.  What, you mean that there are people in the US who have a connection to some other country and might want to watch that other country compete in the olympics?  How extraordinary!  Do you think it just might be possible that some people like sports besides basketball, swimming, gymnastics, and volleyball?  Well, maybe we can at least see it online.  Um, no.  You can only watch the events online (either live or replay) if you already have access to it on your TV.  Great.  If I had access to it on my TV, I wouldn't need to watch it online.  The only replays that appear to be available are a few days old.  You'd think at least the less popular sports would be available to stream live.  You'd think, in the spirit of the olympics, NBC would act a little less like a jerk.  Thanks a lot for showing your true, greedy colors, NBC.  I won't forget this.

Deutschen Autos koennen wir vertrauen.

You'd think a public library would be a haven in this heat wave.  But no.  I went to one near our house last week and walking in was no relief at all.  In fact, after being in there a few minutes, walking back out into the 100 degree heat felt like a relief.  No joke.  I think it was slightly cooler inside but way more humid, and outside, at least there was a breeze.  I am so so so happy and thankful that we have central A/C in our house.  We have had it set at 80 degrees, but it's comfortable and it still felt like we were walking into a fridge when we come in from outside.  The hubs even napped in the basement one day, which is always a few degrees cooler than the main floor (and the main floor is always a few degrees cooler than the top floor).  I'm glad the temperature is back to normal.

So today was a stressful day.  All I want to do it watch The Sound of Music.  For whatever reason, it seems like watching that movie would take away my stress.  This week is just going to be a stressful week.

July Already!

Today included a trip to Detroit and Dearborn.  If I wouldn't have had to teach in the afternoon, we would've gone to Canada, too.  But, alas, the time constraint did not allow us to make it to Point Pelee or even Windsor.  Detroit was lovely in the warm, cloudless morning.  And Dearborn.  We enjoyed our time (and food) in Dearborn so much that we were talking about going back tomorrow.  Yes, we've been there before and done it all already, but today was just so nice and so delicious.  So maybe tomorrow... but probably not.  I would bet that the desire to sleep would win out over the desire to eat  chocolate croissants, meat pies, spinach and cheese pies, and succulent chicken.  Maybe on Wednesday.

Almost two weeks ago, I crushed my thumb in the car door.  Yup, I'm just that smart.  And, wow, that was painful.  It stopped throbbing after a couple days, and a few days after that, I could start touching it without experiencing sharp pains.  Now, the swelling is down and I don't have to worry about hitting it on anything, but I still can't pick anything up with the thumb.  I can't put any pressure on it.  Maybe the bone at the end is broken?  The joint is fine, it bends and all, but I can't put any significant pressure on the top half of my thumb.  Oh well.  At least there's no thumb cast.

Happy July!
