Moving is Exhausting
I think time moves faster in the new place. I've been here all day, awake since 8:30 (for the Comcast guy), and it feels like no time has passed. And I don't even know what I've been doing. I watched a short movie in the afternoon and an episode of Friends with breakfast, and besides taking a shower, the only other things I've done are making lunch and putting stuff away.
For whatever reason, I've been looking forward to the Oscars all month, but now that they're here, I'm not excited. I don't know why I was looking forward to them... I hardly ever watch them. Meh.
The new place is great and I really have no idea how we fit all of our stuff into the old apartment.
I can't find a glass and it's bothering me. Where could it be?
Our new internet is so fast and wonderful. I love having our own internet.
Happy Valentine's Day
Today was a discouraging day. I hate EMU.
But my hubby is the best. We celebrated Valentine's Day yesterday with a nice dinner, much chocolate covered fruit, gifts, and a movie.
Nidhal and I are moving, and I am now have many reasons in two categories to look forward to it.
A. New place is great!
1. three stories
2. lots of storage space
3. nice views
4. conveniently located (walking distance to a Kroger)
5. in a walkable neighborhood
6. walking distance to a library
7. extra bedroom
8. soon-to-be central AC
9. free water and trash
10. two bathrooms
11. ...and the list could go on and on.
B. Current place sucks!
1. no storage space
2. annoying adjacent-apartment neighbors
3. annoying above-apartment neighbors
4. annoying neighbors outside in the middle of the night
5. neighbors who smoke in the halls
6. neighbors who make the halls smell like rotten melons
7. neighbors who let their kids run through the halls
8. neighbors who leave dents and scratches in our car
9. neighbors who open up the drier while my clothes are in it and then do not reselect the cycle when they close it resulting in me spending $1.30 to not dry my clothes
10. neighbors who break the lock on our mailbox
11. ...and the list could go on and on.
Now, I had some nice memories of this place, and last month, I was almost reluctant to leave. For Nidhal and me, it was our first home together. It has served us well, and generally speaking, the management, maintenance, and office staff are good. Plus, it's really close to my classes. So I was almost wishing that we weren't leaving. But then, THEN, the neighbors went back to their usual idiocy. When we first moved in, the people above us were very loud and over the years, we've had many problems with loud people in the parking lot. But since we came back from Tunisia, our neighbors above have caused us no problems. Until yesterday. Playing your guitar at midnight? Jumping up and down? Not acceptable. Our adjacent neighbors also began to be pests. They had one loud party and forced us to sleep in the living room, we complained, and we thought it was over. But no. No, it was not. Last night, we were startled out of our sleep by them jovially yelling at each other. Nice. Rancid smelling hallway? Of course. These awful neighbors have served to bring me back to the reality of the place, and I am now more than ready to move on.
Unpleasantness
This weekend I had the stomach flu. It even got me out of class yesterday. I was so weak and sore on Sunday that I could barely walk or talk. When I researched foods that are good for an upset stomach, I was surprised to see that between Nidhal and me, we had all the food covered. From Nidhal's experience, peppermint (tea) and rice are good choices. From mine, crackers and ginger ale. When he was at the store, he asked if I wanted bananas, and after thinking it over, I thought that bananas sounded safe. Sure enough, they were on the list of foods to eat (the list was peppermint, rice, ginger, crackers, and bananas).
I hate it when maintenance comes when I'm still in my pajamas. They're banging on the door and I'm thinking, "can I ignore them? will they go away? will they come in anyway if I don't answer? do I have time to put on some pants?" It's not an ideal situation. Plus, our apartment is a huge mess right now so that's kind of embarrassing. Oh well. This morning, it was maintenance with DTE to come in and install energy efficient light bulbs. And now I have to leave the lights on for an hour so that the lights can reach their maximum potential.
We're still in the process of moving. Fun fun.
Forward
So Monday we went to the store because we had procrastinated going grocery shopping for at least a week. When we went to check out, we noticed that it was really busy. The reason we had gone on Monday was to avoid the weekend crowds and we couldn't figure out why it was so busy. But then we heard someone saying that everyone was there because of the upcoming snowstorm. Nidhal and I laughed at them because, seriously, you might be stuck at home for one day, maximum two days, before being able to easily get to the store. Even at its worst, this storm wasn't going to snow you in for a week or anything. So we bought what we needed and went home. Just as I predicted, the storm wasn't that bad. The roads were quickly taken care of, and Nidhal and I were planning to go out today to take some stuff to our new place and buy some meat. Well, Nidhal went out to the car to clean it off and get it warmed up, but alas, the car wouldn't start. No matter how hard we tried or how many times we tried to jump it, it refused to do anything. Luckily, Nidhal was able to borrow a car to get to class tonight, but now that the tow truck is taking away our car, we won't have any means of transportation until whatever is wrong is fixed. We are worse than snowed in. And now I wish that I had done a little more shopping on Monday. How ironic.
Since I've gotten my Kindle, I've definitely read more books than usual... about 7 books in as many weeks. I love it.
